The IEEE Houston Section in collaboration with the NSBE Process Improvement Special Interest Group, is having a series of webinars during Black History Month 2021. Each webinar during this series will take a deep dive into the historical understanding on African-American and other ethnic STEM innovators. During each webinar, we will discuss some key innovators’ contributions to STEM, and their challenges to bring their work to life. Elementary students through professionals are encouraged and welcomed to attend these sessions. Professional Development Hours (PDH) certificates will be given to those who attend any webinar of this series for at least 45 minutes. Registration for each webinar will close 48 hours before the webinar date.
Participants of this series will be able to:

Gain insight into African-Americans and others who have made contributions to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Learn about innovators who shaped history with their contributions and the time period in which they lived

Understand the impact of their contributions to STEM

Build nonfiction literacy skills as they read additional article resources

Apply critical thinking skills to answer questions regarding STEM Innovators contributions
Why Wednesdays?
Wednesday is Wodens-day, the Anglo-Saxon equivalent of the Norse Odin or the Roman Mercury, a sky god and the god of wisdom, poetry, commerce, travel, thievery, eloquence and science. He is also the messenger of the other gods. Woden represents Mercury, meaning that Wednesday is Mercury day.

Christopher Sanderson, SMIEEE is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology and a military Officer Commission in the United States Army Air Defense Artillery in 1995. He has worked for companies like Schneider Electric (formerly Square D), General Electric (GE), Siemens Energy & Automation (SIEMENS), and ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) in the electrical Power and Distribution space.
He holds a number of positions within IEEE, R5 Houston Section Chair, R5 South Area Chair, IEEE-USA Career & Development Committee Chair, and IEEE Eta Kappa Nu Board of Directors Region 5 & 6. He is also a NSBE member and the NSBE PI SIG Technical Co-Director.

Ogunna Njoku has more than 19 years of professional experience with his primary expertise in the areas of Business Transformation, Change Management, Process Improvement, System Engineering, and Project Management. His primary roles are providing management and project support in particular in the areas of Operations Management, Quality Program Management and Continuous Process Improvement focusing on the identification and improvement of efficiencies within service operations. He is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has served as both deployment adviser developing improvement strategies (A3, Lean Six Sigma, and Business Process Improvement) and identifying high priority projects, as well as Project Manager, executing multiple large and small scale projects with both long and short term time-lines.

Week 3 with Dr. Charles Davis - February 24, 2021

Dr. Charles Davis is a professor at Valencia College teaching various courses in Pre-Engineering, Mathematics, and Quality Assurance and Test Methods, Engineering Management, Communications, and Ethics and Statistical Theory for Engineering Technology. He is also the advisor of two (2) engineering clubs at Valencia College - Florida Engineering Society and the National Society of Black Engineers. Dr Davis has over 27 years of extensive experience in both public and private sectors consisting of Project Management, Leadership and Quality Assurance. He earned bachelor’s degree in design engineering, Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering with a concentration in Engineering Management and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Central Florida.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Process Improvement (PI) Special Interest Group (SIG) was established to build a presence as subject matter experts (SMEs) within various industries with regards to Process Improvement.
